Fantasia Gets Her Own Reality TV Show

Los Angeles, CA (CNS) - Former "American Idol" champ Fantasia Barrino has landed herself a reality TV show. The 24-year-old's VH1 series will follow her life as a singer and as a single mother, according to If Magazine.

Barrino was raped in the ninth grade by a schoolmate, leaving her harassed and embarrassed. She dropped out of school later that year. By age 17, she became an unwed mother.

At 19, she became the youngest contestant ever to win the Fox reality talent show until Jordin Sparks won the title in 2007. After her success in the show, she released her debut single, "I Believe," which debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2006, she played herself in the Lifetime TV film based on her memoir "Life Is Not a Fairy Tale." She also starred in the Broadway rendition of "The Color Purple."

Barrino's upcoming reality show will premiere early next year, with Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato and Tom Campbell executive producing.

Curvy Diva Duets: The Two Jennifers - J. Hud & J. Holliday & Fantasia!!

*Fans at Thursday's Atlanta stop of the Jennifer Hudson/Robin Thicke tour got a special treat when Hudson brought Jennifer Holliday on stage for a sing-off of the song that brought both of them critical acclaim – "And I'm Telling You (I'm Not Going)."

Holliday made the song famous when she sang it eight times a week in the original 1981 Broadway production of Dreamgirls. Hudson's version in the 2006 movie adaptation propelled her toward an Oscar win.

Meanwhile, Holliday wasn't the only one joining Hudson onstage in Atlanta. She and fellow "American Idol" alum Fantasia performed their Grammy-nominated song "I'm His Only Woman."

Forever 21's line, Faith 21, will have sizes ranging from XL-2X, while Target's Pure Energy line will go up to a size 30.

It's about time, said several shoppers scouring the crowded racks of a Forever 21 branch in downtown Manhattan, New York, one recent afternoon.

"I would love to be able to shop in one store with my friends that are all different sizes," said one young petite college student, who was eyeing the $2.50 tank tops. "I think it's great that they're expanding."

Another shopper, a full-figured teen in a stylish baby doll dress, was also excited. "I tried on something earlier that was totally cute and it did not fit my breast size, which is really frustrating, because I liked it." Video Watch two reactions to the new lines »

Faith 21 will feature of-the-moment pieces like sheer peasant blouses, denim leggings and curve-hugging mini dresses. Pure Energy will have skinny jeans, maxi dresses and sleeveless party tops.

Ruth Bowen, a pioneering booking agent dead at 84

Ruth Bowen, founder of The Bowen Agency Ltd., passed away in New York City on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 after battling a brain tumor.
Ruth Bowen, a pioneering booking agent who represented many of the nation's top African-American performers, died Tuesday after a long battle with a brain tumor. She was 84.

Over more than six decades, Bowen guided the careers of such entertainment luminaries as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis Jr. and her first husband, William (Billy) Bowen, one of the original Ink Spots.

Thanks to her husband's introduction, Bowen went on to manage the career of Dinah Washington, the "Queen of the Blues." But Washington first told Bowen she had to obtain her booking license, which she did in 1959 with the help of attorney and future New York City Mayor David Dinkins.

Actress Bea Arthur Dies at 86

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Beatrice Arthur, the tall, deep-voiced actress whose razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines made her a TV star in the hit shows "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" and who won a Tony Award for the musical "Mame," died Saturday. She was 86.

Arthur died peacefully at her Los Angeles home with her family at her side, family spokesman Dan Watt said. She had cancer, Watt said, declining to give further details.

"She was a brilliant and witty woman," said Watt, who was Arthur's personal assistant for six years. "Bea will always have a special place in my heart."

Arthur first appeared in the landmark comedy series "All in the Family" as Edith Bunker's loudly outspoken, liberal cousin, Maude Finley. She proved a perfect foil for blue-collar bigot Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor), and their blistering exchanges were so entertaining that producer Norman Lear fashioned Arthur's own series.

In a 2008 interview with The Associated Press, Arthur said she was lucky to be discovered by TV after a long stage career, recalling with bemusement CBS executives asking about the new "girl."

"I was already 50 years old. I had done so much off-Broadway, on Broadway, but they said, `Who is that girl? Let's give her her own series,'" Arthur said.

"Maude" scored with television viewers immediately on its CBS debut in September 1972, and Arthur won an Emmy Award for the role in 1977.

Fred C. Quinn Sept 15, 1943 - April 12, 2009

Today is Easter Sunday,

My father, Fred C. Quinn passed away this morning of complications from liver cancer. He was 66 years old.

Needless to say, Easter will NEVER be the same for me again. I have found over the last few weeks that I am quite a bit more like my father than I would previously admit to. I wanted to write quite a bit more about my dad and our relationship, but I find that I am as yet unable to.... the tears still flow freely but the words will not come just yet.

I will have to table it for later.....but trust....it IS coming.

I will miss you forever Daddy.

I love you.

Sharon

What's up with the exclusion of Plus Sized Models on The View

What Up Family!?

If you all know me at all....you know that I love to watch The View on ABC in the morning while I am having my coffee. My favorite segment of the show of course are the "hot topics"....cuz that's when all the FIGHTING starts...lol.

Now, I have worked on the View MANY, MANY times as a plus sized model during the Star Jones era of the show. I gotta tell you family.....Right now...I am LONGING for the return of Star Jones (or at least someone who THINKS like her) and I will tell you why.....

This morning I watched the show which was specifically geared to teen girls and the producers brought in Glamour Magazine to put on a little fashion show for teen girls - based their style influences from teen music icons (i.e Miley Cyrus, Beyonce etc....). I had a big ole problem with this fashion show for several reasons.....

For one thing...call me old fashion but if you are MY teenage daughter - you won't be going ANYWHERE in no 3 inch heels. Period. One of the models pinky toe didn't even FIT in that grown ass shoe they had her in!!! WTH is up with THAT Glamour??? They had those poor girls clomping around the stage like HORSES because it was clearly evident that they could NOT walk in those shoes!!! Big giant bags/purses on 13 year olds??? NOT!!!! For goodness sakes let these girls be GIRLS for as long as they can!!!

I did, however, love the fact that both Joy and Elizabeth questioned some of those styling choices that they chose for the young models....

My OTHER problem with this show (and this is what makes me long for Star's return) is the fact that they (both the producers AND Glamour Magazine) chose to totally ignore the plus sized teenager....not a mention anywhere. This would have NEVER happened with Star - if she was nothing else on that show....she was VERY VOCAL about the inclusion of plus sizes in the fashion segments. We plus sized gals worked steadily when Miss Star was on the show (of course now that she's lost all that weight - she's no longer vocal like she used to be). As a matter of fact, there were entire fashion SEGMENTS devoted to plus sizes, largely at the behest of Miss Star (who I am assuming got real tired of not seeing a representation of herself on the stage!) I mean they had all the teen music icons....why didn't you include Raven Symone, who's a plus sized singer/actress with a HUGE following. This is just totally ignorant and I cannot believe that with all those "Chunky Monkeys" (lol...thanks for that one Deb) sitting on that panel now...that NO ONE bothered to say anything about it!!!

To The View and it's Producers AND Glamour Magazine - Check the stats! Over 2/3 of the population are a size 14 or larger.....RECOGNIZE!!! Segments like this one are sending out the wrong message to these teen girls (who are already struggling to be comfortable in their own skins - amongst so much peer pressure) and y'all really need to check yourselves!

That's just my two cents.

I'm done.

lol...for now.

LaKisha Jones & BV Buzz's Jawn Murray

It's always unfortunate when good entertainers hire a bad publicist!

Such is the case with 'American Idol' season six finalist Lakisha Jones.

Last Monday, March 23, I contacted Jones' "urban publicist" Denise McIver to seek comment about the 29-year-old singer's pregnancy with the intent to break the news simultaneously on AOL Black Voices and during my segment on the nationally syndicated 'Tom Joyner Morning Show.'

McIver immediately told me that she'd "have to call me back" and moments later, I received a call from Jones' "mainstream publicist" Jay Schwartz of JDS PR instead (see photo); a fast-talking, unprincipled publicist who attempted to charm me by reminding me of the time he patched in a phone interview with me and Gladys Knight.

Schwartz then asked me if I would hold the news I had on Jones "because they weren't ready for the news to come out."

I denied his request and he clearly wasn't happy. He then tried to run the standard public relations game on me until he realized that I was no easy customer and had no intentions of changing my mind.

Ann Nesby & The Lula Lee Project

Ann Nesby

Ann Nesby has been on a whirlwind promotional tour to roll out her latest CD, 'The Lula Lee Project.'

In between promo stops in Dallas, Houston, Nashville and Atlanta, the "Queen of Inspirational Soul" took time to chat with BV Buzz about her newest release.

Nesby, the former lead vocalist of Sounds of Blackness, believes her urban inspirational CD offers encouragement for the troubled times our country is facing.

"This album provides answers to where to find relief, shelter and confirmation that everything will be all right when you trust God. As Christians, we shouldn't be worried by the economic situation if we live by the seedtime and harvest principle: God is our provider," she said.

Happy Palm Sunday!

Happy Palm Sunday Family!

Palm Sunday,
in the Christian calendar, the Sunday before Easter, sixth and last Sunday in Lent, and the first day of Holy Week. It recalls the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem riding upon an ass, when his followers shouted “Hosanna” and scattered palms in his path.

In the Roman Catholic and some Protestant churches, ceremonies of the day are the blessing and distribution of crosses made from palm leaves and the recitation of one of the three synoptic accounts of the Passion. Many wear crosses made of the palm.

Peace & Blessings Family.

"Practically everyone has known the taste of Palm Sunday, the sweetness of success and popularity, and nearly all of us have tasted the bitterness of Good Friday, of failure and rejection. What saves us from an endless round of ups and downs, what frees us from the tyranny of events over which we have no control is our commitment to press forward in obedience to God -it is trust in God's love to bring about Easter morning, - knowing that the meaning of life is to be found in the knowledge and love of God,- and in sharing that knowledge and love with those who accompany us on the way. "

Happy Birthday Freddie!!

Yesterday was my stepfather's birthday. Today my family headed up to the Bronx to celebrate his day. His name is Freddie and he is in the late stages of Alzheimer's disease. I baked him a lemon birthday cake and all of his children, grandchildren (except 1 who was unable to attend) and great grandchildren made the trip with us to spend the day with him.

The disease has robbed him of his memory and most of his cognitive skills but occasionally he has moments of clarity and recognizes his wife and family. It was those moments yesterday that brought me the most joy. The facility was kind enough to let us utilize their conference room because there were so many of us in our group (final count was 19!) We all had lunch and sang happy birthday, and you KNOW I never leave home without my camera...so I took plenty of pictures. We stayed with him for the better part of the day and occasionally we caught a glimpse of the person he used to be.

It was a long day but Freddie was happy and more importantly my mother was happy to see how much his family loves him.

It was a good day.

Happy Birthday Freddie!! We all love you and miss you and we dedicate this song to you....

Jennifer Hudson Covers Entertainment Weekly

Jennifer Hudson is rocking the cover of the upcoming Entertainment Weekly hitting stands April 6th:

On feeling “the church” while singing: “In church we call that the Anointing, that’s what you’re feeling. Music is my home. When I’m trying to find my inner peace, when it seems like everything is overwhelming, I put music in my ears…We were what you call ‘born in the church. I would go with my grandmother and my mom, and when I was little, I would fall asleep on their laps in the choir stand….The church has given me balance. Too often we look at things through human eyes. But when you look at the world spiritually, it makes far more sense. I don’t think I would be here without it.”

Jennifer’s Godmother Debra on Jennifer’s first time singing: She was less than a year old. She hadn’t said a word, and all of a sudden she hit this soprano note, such a beautiful, clear, high-pitched note. I jumped up and ran to the front of the church and said, ‘This baby’s going to sing!’”

Jennifer’s manager Walt on how they got to where they are: “I would take her to the gay clubs and they would have these talent competitions mainly for drag queens, and I would put Jennifer in them as the only real female. And she would win all the time and take all those drag queens’ money. They were so mad!

Jill Scott Says Marriage and Music May Have to Wait

Jill Scott Says Marriage and Music May Have to Wait

Mom-to-be awaits delivery of first child

Three-time Grammy-winning singer Jill Scott is counting down the days before she gets to lay eyes on what she calls her most precious “gift” yet. The soon-to-be-mom, whose due date is April 25, looks forward to her little one, since past doctors told her that she was unable to conceive. “He’s my little warrior,” Scott told Jet magazine. “So far, he’s been to Africa with me, he’s worked in extreme heat and during 14-15 hour days. He’s hung in there with me through this whole thing and I just cannot get over it. This is incredible.”

If things had gone as intended, Scott would have married Lil’ John Roberts, 37, her band’s drummer, last month. The pregnancy, however, has since altered their plans. “We are just people, of course, so we have to deal with one thing at a time. We may get married. We may not. Who knows? We don’t. We’re just taking it as slow as we can.” (p. 36)

Elmo, John Mayer, and Queen Latifah look to help families of soldiers on PBS

Handout

Queen Latifah, John Mayer, and pals from 'Sesame Street' in 'Coming Home: Military Families Cope With Change'

COMING HOME: MILITARY FAMILIES COPE WITH CHANGE Wednesday night at 8, PBS

Elmo and some of his "Sesame Street" pals move to prime time Wednesday night with a special to help children understand that sometimes, when Daddy becomes a soldier, Daddy can come home hurt.

Presumably that's also true for Mommy if Mommy is a soldier, but all the wounded vets who join Queen Latifah for this serious but ultimately hopeful show Wednesday night happen to be men.

Put together by "Sesame Street" and David Letterman's production company, "Coming Home" is part of a wider campaign called "Talk, Listen, Connect." As the name suggests, it urges everyone to be open and honest about how they're affected by a life-changing injury in the family.

To punctuate the point, John Mayer does an acoustic performance of the theme song toward the end of Wednesday night's program.

"Coming Home" is similar to the Linda Ellerbee specials that break down complex, grownup issues into simple terms, with a sprinkling of actual kids and a general tone of reassurance.

The show features several soldiers who suffered severe injuries in Iraq and have returned to their families. Now they are adjusting to the new rules of their lives.
