Soul At Ceol (Pronounced KEEL)

Last night I got reacquainted with my first love....Singing! My friend (and my publicist's husband) Chef Syncere held his first event...Aptly titled "Soul at Ceol" (pronounced KEEL). Ceol is an Irish Pub located at 191 Smith Street in Downtown Brooklyn.

I was apprehensive ALL DAY LONG about this gig because I haven't sung in a LONG minute...lol...so needless to say I was a nervous wreck by the time Mary picked me up. My fears dissapated quickly once I arrived at the venue. The whole set up has very cozy and down home casual feel that put me at ease almost immediately.

I made my way past the bar to the smaller dining area in the back. As Mary and I got seated the room actually began to fill up quickly. Mary's friend Justice came in shortly afterwards and joined us at our table. There was a table full of young ladies visiting from Paris...who planned on being in my city for the next 5 months....They WILL be New Yorkers when the city finishes with them...lol...Anyway, I clocked them enjoying BAR FOOD (Wings, Mozzarella Sticks & Chicken Fingers...you know...the usual) and I had to make them come back and try some Collard Greens, Fried Chicken and Mac & Cheese....some food with SUBSTANCE!!! lol....they assured me they'd be back.

Soul at Ceol is Chef Syncere's baby...he came up with the really cool idea of serving Soul Food with Soul Music once a month! I don't know about anyone else but I LOVE SOUL FOOD & SOUL MUSIC!!! How could I NOT??? Soul Music is the soundtrack to my life and Soul food????? Hell! It's what I grew up eating...and the menu doesn't disappoint. Fried Chicken, Fried Fish, BBQ Chicken, Mac & Cheese, Collard Greens, Crabcakes (THESE ARE REALLY GOOD YA'LL!!!) and a lovely mesculun salad...with Apple Cobbler for Dessert!!! You can't go wrong here ya'll...All that was missing for me...of course was the....(DRUM ROLL PLEASE.....)

POTATO SALAD!!!!! (I kid you NOT Syncere....I will NOT REST until there's some POTATO SALAD to go with my Fried Chicken/Fish!!!!!)...so there!

Jacqueline arrived shortly before my set and also joined us for dinner. Anyway, I wound up taking the stage at around 9pm and I sang three songs...that actually went over really well....I was only prepared to do 2-3 songs but by er....popular (yeah...thanks Jacqueline...heh-heh) demand (?) and after a brief break and the introduction of Chef Syncere....I came back on later to do two more requests. The crowd ate it up and really got into the songs! (They especially loved the Gladys Knight tunes!).

Afterwards, I sat down and snarfed down my crabcakes....they were SO good ya'll...you gotta try em! The owners, Loretta Heaney & Samantha Meehan loved my show and asked me to come back on the spot! As for me....it felt good to get my feet wet again in a singing venue and I am definitely excited about doing it again! We are looking at the last Wednesday of every month but I will definitely keep you all informed about the dates as they come!

Thanks as always for your continued support!

OF COURSE...it couldn't be a Runway Diva blog without SOMETHING happening right? As we were heading to our cars to go home....Jacqueline couldn't get her car to start and she couldn't turn OFF her alarm....Samantha's wonderful husband, John came out to assist and it took a concerted effort of SEVERAL men (Syncere, John and a Dominican man from the restaurant) to get her up and running again.

Lol...I don't know WHO that dominican cutie was...but he was an absolute savior to me that night....lol..I was cold and all I wanted to do was go home! Thank you Papi!

Syncere...Good looking out! Thank you so much!

The Plus Academy Open House

Yesterday afternoon I had the pleasure of attending and speaking at an Open House for Gwen DeVoe's Plus Academy....one of my favorite organizations for plus sized women.

The Plus Academy is New York City's first and leading model training and development program, exclusively for plus size women.

Since 1999, They have provided unsurpassed training and guidance, helping to launch the careers of several plus models, many of whom have appeared in print ads, runway showcases, television programs, online magazines, designer showcases, pageants and more.

They also offer a variety of personal development and lifestyle workshops for plus size women and pre-teenagers. Their classes are taught by a team of professionals who are experienced in the plus size market and in conducting workshops associated with issues affecting plus size women.

The plus modeling industry is a rapidly growing market. More designers are adding plus size lines to their existing collections, increasing plus modeling opportunities for women. If you are ready to fulfill your dreams of becoming a plus model check out The Plus Academy at :
www.theplusacademy.com.

The open house was held in Manhattan and I was pleased to see that the turnout was amazing...so many folks responded that they had to stop taking reservations. The room was elegantly decorated in lavender & purple, with a wonderful array of italian pastries and a wine & champagne bar. Some of the most influential people that SOME of you may never have heard of were on board to be guest speakers and/or presenters.

We were greeted at the door by DSE member Roslyn "Rocky" Grate who checked folks in with a display of all the programs produced by DeVoe Signature Events. For those of you who don't what falls under the umbrella of DSE, let me put you in "the know" Gwen is the brainchild behind Full Figured & Fabulous (The Plus Model Runway Competition), Dangerous Curves...The Tour!/Hips, Heels & Curves(The traveling Trunk Show /Sample Sale), Project Curves (A weekend Seminar/boot camp for Aspiring models) & of course The Plus Academy.

Gwen "Diva" DeVoe opened up by welcoming everyone and giving us a brief history of the Plus Academy, as well as introducing her new "Master Class Lecture Series" before introducing her first speaker of the day, Runway Master Alva Page.

Alva was a little under the weather from a developing cold but he quickly took the stage and declared 2008 as "The Year Of The Walk". Alva believes, like myself that the Art of Runway is a dying one and truly needs to be revived. Alva was so good that I am seriously considering taking his course to brush up MY skills as well (lol...heads up you Diva's in Training...no one is too big to not need to brush up on their skills from time to time).

Alva was followed by Plus Model Terri Murray, who briefed us on the class that she's instructing on how to choose and wear the proper foundation garments. And from what I have seen over the last few years...heh-heh...there is very much a need for this particular class...whew!

Designer Just Raymona who had a couple of her models in tow. Raymona was on hand to let us know about her new line that she's debuting in February...EnV New York. Just Raymona is the woman who designed that fabulous Zebra Print Suit and the Denim Jumpsuit that I wore for Mo'Nique's F.A.T. Chance Paris.

Designer Robert E. Knight also spoke and told everyone how finally came to the decision to make plus sized clothing. lol..Robert and I go WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back to my early days as a model on the New York / New Jersey Fashion circuit....I could never convince him to make me any clothing...lol..love you boo!

Maddy Figueroa-Jones, from Plus Model Magazine briefed us on the Master Class that she's teaching on Posing and Working the Camera. She showed us briefly how to work a shot in 4 slight movements.

I talked about my upcoming class "Agency / Model Expectations: Myths & Realities". As a new booker at IPM Models, the things that I am seeing and the way that I am watching these women walk into the agency unprepared is enough to make the hairs on my neck stand up!!! So I'm going to be talking about what to expect from your agent AND what your agent expects from you!

Plus Model and PA Grad Shanta' Renee talked about her achievements since graduating from The Plus Academy. Miss Shanta is newly signed with IPM and just had her first gig on The Today Show last week! You GO Shanta'!

There was a surprise walk on by Runway/Choreography legend Tim Smart, who was in another studio rehearsing on the same floor. Tim has also conducted classes for The Plus Academy and no one can put together a show quite like he can. Tim also works for the Hal Jackson Talented Teen Beauty Pageant. It was great seeing Tim! He looks really good.

Singer Angel Williams was also in the house and briefly addressed the room and gave out complimentary copies of her new CD.

Also in attendance....Rising Star Plus Model Elisabeth Seifu, Plus Models Shante Gordon & Jeannie Ferguson; The forces behind Curvesity Entertainment, Sonia & Josephine, Kier Walker CEO of Plus Size in The City...and a whole bunch of other familiar faces from the plus model circuit. There was even eyelash applications going on behind the scenes.

Diva wrapped up the presentations and opened the floor for registration...the response was so crazy that even The Runway Diva was helping to sign up new students with Diva & Tonya Giddens!

Of course after the open house wrapped a bunch of us jumped in taxis and cars and headed downtown to have dinner at BBQ's on 23rd st....which was an experience in dining in itself....word to the wise...if you happen to eat at the BBQ's on 23rd st...DON'T let them seat you in the basement...it's like the Siberia of restaurants...all the cool and beautiful people sit upstairs and all the families with screaming kids and er...undesirables...ROFL! get seated downstairs.

If you are a beginning model and don't know where to begin your career....START with the Plus Academy...Do NOT Pass go and head to an agency...you WILL get your face cracked...Stop playing and go and get the tools you need for a successful career!

Sigh...Another Cast Party For The Wire.......

Last night I went down to BB King's to check out the "official" cast party for the 5th & final season of HBO's "The Wire". I wound up standing outside for almost 15-20 minutes waiting for Jacqueline to arrive. As I waited for her, I took a moment to survey the huge line that was amassing out front. They (the promoters) weren't letting anyone in and as my nose began to run, I noticed that nearly everyone on that line looked like er..... cast extras from "The Wire"? (Picture it if you can) and no older than say....hmmm...21-22? Baby!! I just realized that I hadn't watched the show since they killed off Idris Elba's character!!! I had already met Michael K. Williams (Omar) at The Vibe Awards in LA (see blog) a few years back...so why in the heck would I want to STAND OUTSIDE ON LINE IN THE FRIGGIN COLD??? lol..As soon as Jacque arrived, she clocked the same thing and we made an IMMEDIATE decision to skip the party, hit Chevy's for a cocktail and then go back home.

And that's exactly what we did.

The Coconut Pineapple Margarita was off the chain at Chevy's ya'll....you simply MUST try one soon family!

Peace!

Go Green Cookbook Launch Party

Last night I met up with my publicist, Mary Moore at the Museum of The City of New York on Fifth Avenue for the launch party for "The Go Green East Harlem" Cookbook. It was a beautiful affair and was packed to the rafters with politicians, community activists, make up artists, restauranteurs, chef, actresses....etc...you name the profession and I bet you they were in that room last night!

The Go Green East Harlem Cookbook¸ is a compilation of healthy recipes contributed by East Harlem restauranteurs and community residents. The cookbook is part of the Borough President’s Go Green East Harlem health initiative.

The bilingual four-color cookbook, which features healthy recipes for appetizers, soups, salads, entrees and – yes – desserts, will be available in bookstores and online, and will be given out free of charge to many residents of East Harlem.

Other “Go Green” initiatives to date include a new asthma center, the planting of hundreds of street trees in East Harlem, a new farmers’ market on 106th Street, and a “green building” conference for developers, planners and community advocates that Stringer hosted in October. Go Green East Harlem is led by a steering committee of neighborhood residents, civic, environmental and business leaders, public health advocates and elected officials. Each recipe featured in the book was reviewed by experts from the Integrative Nutrition Institute, a leading nutrition school, and is coded with helpful information such as “dairy free,” “sugar free,” and “whole grains.” Among more than 65 people who contributed recipes are Mt. Sinai Hospital President Dr. Burton Drayer (Golden Gazpacho); Ginger Executive Chef Wei Ziong Hu (Fish and Watercress Soup with Glass Noodles); Hilda Candy Vasquez and Sandra Vives-Ramos of the 116th Street Block Association (Spanish Stew Soup); Harlem Tea Room owner Patrice Clayton (Tea Time Salad); Community Board 11 Chair Robert Rodriguez (Honey Baked Chicken); Wagner Tenants’ Association President Katie Harris (Cream of Fruited Chicken); Community Board 11 Vice Chair Debbie Quinones (Limbel del el Caribe); and Settepani Bakery owners Leah Abraham and Nino Settepani (Sicilian Fava Bean Stew).

Borough President Stringer, who does not cook, contributed tips for choosing healthy takeout. Kysha Harris, of the cooking consultant firm Schop!, contributed a section on setting up a kitchen.

The cookbook includes color photos of contributors and East Harlem locations taken by volunteer photographers from the International Center of Photography.

Proceeds from the sale of the Go Green East Harlem Cookbook will go to the Community Fund for Manhattan, the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization established by the Office of the Manhattan Borough President to support public/private partnerships that benefit residents of Manhattan and the City of New York.

The Go Green East Harlem Cookbook is available online at Barnes and Noble

I think that they are putting the final touches on the building so the exterior entrance to the museum was "tented" and that gave it an extra fabulous touch in my opinion. The interior was absolutely gorgeous!!! I simply loved the candle lit winding staircase. They had a three piece band playing and a beautiful gallery at the end of the room that showcased enlarged photographs of all of the contributors to the cookbook. I found the exhibit to be quite interesting.

I got a chance to walk around and survey my surroundings for over an hour because Hillary Clinton was in NJ, traffic was rerouted and that made Mary REALLY late...lol. While walking around I ran into the always gracious Melba Wilson, proprietor of my favorite Harlem restaurant Melba's....she was kind enough to introduce me to Drew Nieporent, the famous restauranteur and owner of Nobu (Great Sushi...I hear...can't quite afford to eat there yet..lol) & Tribeca Grill (Co Owned by Robert DeNiro...LOVE HIM!!!). He was a sweetie but was in mid run to the men's room...he promised he'd come back to talk and to my surprise...he did! I also met the owner of a new boutique in Harlem (2312 Seventh Ave @ 136th St)called "Montgomery"...I definitely gotta check it out...Home girl custom makes clothing!!!

I spotted Deputy Borough President Rosemonde Pierre-Louis at the front door catching all the celebs & (the who's who in the politics of Harlem) as they entered and getting them to stop and pose for a photograph with a copy of the book! Umm...she didn't ask The Runway Diva! to take a photo but the photographer thought that I was beautiful enough and insisted that I take some photos holding the book. I will be honest...I was slightly miffed that the DBP gave me a strange look and was reluctant to give me the book when I asked her for the book to pose with....(I am a Harlemite and I grew up in East Harlem) she didn't ask me who I was nor did bother to find out either....not good politics in my book. Perhaps that's just me being "salty" lol...

My girl Yvette Hayward, creator of the African American Literary Awards, showed up a few minutes later...(thanks for the invite Yvette!). I also ran into Chef Jorge and his brother, who I met last week at the Food Network's Throwdown taping. Mary Moore arrived right before Deputy Mayor Scott Stringer took the stage to thank everyone for coming and to explain what the "Go Green" initiative is all about.

Also on hand were, Style Guru Lloyd Boston; Renee Elise Goldberry (The Color Purple & One Life To Live)...Miss Renee was rocking a pair of Lizard pumps that I simply HAD to take a picture of! Hairstylist Terry Mathis & Titusz C. Bankuti (owner of another of my Fave Harlem restaurants...Ginger on 116th St), I made a LOT of friends this evening and I enjoyed myself immensely! There was a delicious sampling of foods from many of the contributors to the cookbook....the food was off the chain ya'll...and at the bar they were serving a champagne based lager that was actually not bad at all. I clocked the lines for the food tastings (ridiculously long) as the event began winding down. I was glad I sampled the menu early...lol.

People!!! There are some really great restaurants in Harlem...You all should really take a moment check them out!!!

Mo'Nique at The Beacon Theater

Happy MLK Weekend Family!

Saturday, I had the pleasure of checking out Mo'Nique's set at The Beacon Theater in NYC. I hadn't seen or spoken to Mo' since she was here last year at The Paradise Theater in The Bronx, so I was anxious to see her and get caught up on all that's she's been up to. I had spent the better part of my day out in Brooklyn, trying to get a new model set for her first photo shoot. The house next door to her's was flooded and as a result HER basement wound up flooded as well. When I arrived at her house the city had crews in place trying to pump all that water out of her basement. She was a total mess and it's a wonder that we were able to pull anything together amid all that chaos. We accomplished out mission but it took us almost 5 hours to do it and I really thought that I was either going to be real late or miss the show entirely. Fortunately, home girl is a crazy driver...lol...and she got me home and changed and back at The Beacon at approximately 5 minutes to 8pm (showtime).

Jacqueline and I agreed to meet in front of the theater and she was right on time, outside waiting for me. We picked up our tickets at will call (Thanks Joselyn!) and quickly found our seats. Fellow comedians Rodney Perry & George Willborn opened for Mo' and they were both nothing short of hilarious. Rodney Perry did a hilarious take on R. Kelly's song on his new album, where he is obviously having an argument with his lover. George Willborn nearly took me out of here when he let the crowd "have it" for giving him lukewarm applause when he took the stage. He set em' straight and then promptly proceeded to REDO his entrance...the crowd ate that up and gave him thunderous applause on his second entrance.

Mo'Nique took the stage shortly after George Willborn's set and looked amazingly curvy in a metallic, multicolored, body hugging dress with bronze stillettos. Her set was hilarious and when she graciously accepted a "snack" from a fan who came to the concert ready...lol...she threw it right back at her when the fan, when asked what flavor candy she was offering...threw out a seductive sounding "banana" response. A little TOO seductive for Mo'....I was cracking up. On a serious note, she had to call Bob Johnson (former owner of BET) to the carpet for trying to rake Barack Obama over the coals and trying to split the damn vote. You GO Mo!

After the show, Jacque and I hung out while Mo' stood in the lobby to sign autographs and greet her fans. She (Mo') caught up with a guy who was at The Beacon bootlegging t-shirts with her likeness on them. She scolded him nicely for not getting permission to do that or at the very least...offer HER some shirts as a gift. But it was over when HIS boss rang his cell phone in the middle of the conversation and Mo' picked up the call. Baby! She let that boy have it lovely over the phone....I am SURE he was still stuck on stupid after realizing who was actually calling him.

Afterwards, Jacque and I headed back to Mo's hotel so we could sit down and chill and chat for a moment. We all wound up having a late supper in her suite with a magnificent spread provided by some church folks that I think were related to her. The food was great....and for me...it HAD to be, because I ate mine COLD....and it was STILL delicious! Shortly after eating and chatting (George Willborn told us a hilarious story about his first meeting with Rev Jesse Jackson), As the hour inched closer to midnight I noticed that Mo' was yawning and I realized immediately how tired she must have been. I knew she had to be on the set of the movie she was filming (Push) at 7am. I got up, announced that I was leaving...gave her a hug and told her I would call her tomorrow.

Jacqueline and I caught a cab uptown and I passed out as soon as I got home. It was late and I was tired....but I really did have a wonderful time!

The Wire Party at Fashion Forty

Tonight I met up with some friends at Chevy's and decided to head over to Fashion Forty off of Seventh avenue for what was supposed to be an industry party for "The Wire".....I knew something was up when I heard what venue the party was being held in. I have been to Fashion Forty a million times and I knew that the place was (is) kinda small and I just didn't see the "vision". So we walked over, got inside and saw immediately that the place was crazy crowded. After checking our coats, we headed upstairs to the VIP area and just sort of hung out for a while....lol...until we realized that "The Wire" party hadn't started yet and we were actually crashing someone else's bday party.

Later on I did actually manage to run into an actual cast member, Isaiah Whitlock (he's the crooked politician on the show) and he was more than happy to take a photo with The Runway Diva:

After I finally got my "Wire" fixed, we finished our cocktails, waited....oh....10 minutes or so before they FOUND OUR COATS IN THE COAT CHECK!!! Said our goodbyes and I jumped on the train and headed back up to Harlem!

lol...interesting night.

Joanne Borgella Gets Her Ticket To Hollywood!!!!

Morning Family!!!!

Am I the only one (besides Tonya Giddens...who is ALWAYS on EVERYTHING!) who caught a glimpse of Joanne Borgella (Miss F.A.T. 2005) getting her ticket to Hollywood on American Idol last night?????

I am SO Psyched for this now....I feel like I have a REAL REASON to watch now.

You GO Joanne Borgella! I am so very proud of you and I most definitely will be rooting for you mama!

Much Success to you in 2008!!

BOBBY FLAY IS THE BOMB!!!!!

Yo Family!!!

Yesterday, I went to a taping for a show on The Food Network. I answered an ad for audience members on Craig's list for a new cooking show. The location was in East Harlem and being a Harlemite myself....I simply couldn't resist checking it out. The address was on 106th Street between Lexington & Third Avenues. As soon as I walked in and saw the setup, I got really excited. I turned and whispered Jacqueline (who I managed to drag with me...again...lol),

"This looks like a Throwdown to me!"

Not 10 minutes later....in walks Bobby Flay!!! I screamed!!! I LOVE THE FOOD NETWORK AND I LOVE WATCHING BOBBY FLAY DO HIS THING!!!.

Needless to say, a sista was amped up to taste his cooking. It was an "Arroz Con Pollo" Throwdown and it was Chef Flay vs Chef Jorge, who's the chef at FB Lounge on 106th St. Now I have been in Harlem most of my life and I had absolutely no idea that the word on the street was that some of the best Arroz Con Pollo in the country could be found within walking distance of my house.

Bobby Flay was in the building and looking REAL GOOD ya'll!!! He looks like he's dropped some weight and he was all toned and buff! A DEFINITE HOTTIE!!!! I took to Chef Flay immediately and I think he took to me as well! I took every opportunity to be next to him whenever I could. I don't care what they print about his supposedly arrogant personality in the media...He was an absolute doll and gracious to everyone in that room. He even danced with one of the Salsa dancers during the break (and get this....he held his own on the dance floor too!) I think he enjoyed my company too because when he was leaving he made a point to come over and tell me it was a pleasure meeting me and he even gave me a departing kiss on the cheek! I was floored!

Of course you KNOW I can't give away the winner of the Throwdown here....but the episode will be running in the next 6 to 8 weeks, I will keep you posted on the air dates!

BOBBY FLAY ROCKS!!!! (I feel like I will definitely see him again, ya'll!)

(I forgot my camera but I was able to get someone to take one for me and I will post it as soon as I have it!)

Thanks as always Jacqueline.
