The Gossip frontwoman Beth Ditto, 15-stone American singer, has appeared naked on the cover of the new U.S. fashion and fame magazine Love for its launch issue.
Ditto was chosen as the Love magazine's first cover girl by celebrity stylist Katie Grand, who apparently intended to put plus-size woman on the cover in order to ditch the 'perfect woman' image.
In her first editor's letter, Grand wrote: "She says the wrong things. She looks the wrong way. Isn't it confounding and amazing to have an iconic figure... who doesn't have a 25-inch waist?
"She is happy with who she is and the way she is."
In the revealing cover photo, the openly gay singer appears naked with copper-colored hair and black lips, closing her eyes and covering her genitals with a pink tutu. Her nipples are partially covered with cleverly written wording, which reads 'Icons of Our Generation, Beth Ditto.'
This is not the first time the 27-year-old Gossip singer has stripped off for the cover of a magazine. In 2007, Ditto had posed naked for the cover of music magazine NME with hairy armpits. For her NME magazine photo-shoot Ditto was later praised by feminist author and Celebrity Big Brother contestant Germaine Greer.
Born on 19 February 1981 (What a great day to be born!!! That's MY birthday too!!) in Arkansas, Ditto is an American singer for the indie rock band The Gossip. She came to wider public attention in November 2006 when NME selected her as the coolest person in rock.
Ditto was also nominated for "Sexiest Woman Of The Year" at the NME Awards 2007, and was placed at No. 10 on Spinner.com's "Women Who Rock Right Now".
In 2007, she had turned down a design deal with high street giant Topshop citing her dissatisfaction with their clothes range not being available in her size. The singer also made a fierce verbal attack on size zero celebrities and blamed the fashion industry’s gay men to encourage the size zero trend.
“If there’s anyone to blame for size zero, it’s not women,” she said at the time. “Blame gay men who work in the fashion industry who want these women as dolls. Men don’t know what it feels like to be a woman and be expected to look a particular way. The Beckhams are part of the machine; Paris Hilton is part of the machine.”
The outspoken feminist Ditto currently lives in Portland, Oregon.
