Several miles away in his downtown Manhattan office, civil rights lawyer Cesar Perales was in tears.
All across the nation, Latinos were ecstatic after learning that President Obama had named federal Court of Appeals Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Senate approval would make her the first Hispanic to serve on the high court.
More importantly, Obama made clear that Sotomayor has more experience as a federal district and appellate court judge than any current member of the high court had when appointed.
