Style Network's New Real-Life Drama Series "Ruby" Based On 500-Pound Woman's Battle With Obesity

(CBS) Imagine having the fear of knowing that if you take the next bite of food it may ultimately kill you.

Well for Ruby Gettinger this is her everyday reality.

Gay Rosenthal Productions (who produced "Little People, Big World") is at real-life drama again, but this time they are bringing the world of obesity to the camera lens.

The Style Network will shift its attention this fall to an unexpected non-scripted series called "Ruby," which highlights the life of Ruby Gettinger, a 500-pound young woman living in Savannah, Ga.

The series gives viewers a powerful perspective - through the eyes of Ruby, who endures day to day difficulties living in a world that accommodates regular sized people.

Ordinary activities that we may take for granted, such as sitting down in chair, getting dressed and going to the movies are a constant struggle for Ruby.

Despite her over-dependence and over-reliance on food for so many years, Ruby has an amazing spirit that will capture viewers and make them concerned for her well being.

"Style's programming is centered on engaging personalities and inspirational stories that are relatable to real women," said Salaam Coleman Smith, Style's Executive Vice President. "Ruby is a warm-hearted, beautiful woman whose smile lights up the room. We believe that Style's female audience will connect with her emotional journey and everyday challenges as she faces this critical crossroads."

Ruby's battle against obesity isn't just about fitting in an image-obsessed society or confronting her insecurities, it goes much deeper than that. It's a story of survival.

According to her doctor, Ruby is morbidly obese and she must lose the weight or else she may die.

In a final attempt, Ruby will take viewers on her powerful journey to loose hundreds of pounds in a crusade to save her own life.

She won't be alone during her fight however.

Ruby, who also has Type 2 Diabetes, will be accompanied by a team of experts, including a trainer, nutritionist, therapist and physician, who are dedicated to educating and motivating her to end the vicious cycle of food addiction.

In her pursuit of health and happiness, Ruby's friends and family - who may have once been enablers to her poor eating habits and inactive lifestyle, finally step up to the plate to support and discipline her.

"Ruby" is produced by Gay Rosenthal Productions with Gay Rosenthal and Paul Barosse as Executive Producers and Nicholas Caprio and Victoria Zielinski as Co-Executive Producers working with Style's Executive Producer Sarah Weidman. Consulting Executive Producers are Tim Puntillo and Brittany Daniel.

"Ruby" premieres on Sunday, November 9th at 8pm (EST)/7pm (CST) on the Style Network.

Barack Obama IS the 44th President of the United States!!!

We did it family!!!!

We managed to unite as a people and finally do the right thing and tonight we united to put the first EVER Black President in the White House. I went to my first ever election party tonight at a neighbor Vanda's house and I had an absolute blast!! This was the most exciting thing I have done in a long time and I can say honestly that I have never been more proud to be an American as I am on this day!

We counted down the minutes until the polls closed at 11:00pm (EST) and when Charles Gibson from ABC project Barack Obama as the winner after the polls closed, the tears began to flow freely throughout the room! In Harlem, cars on the street began honking their horns and people ran out of their houses and flowed into the streets cheering and chanting "Yes We Can!" There hasn't been this much excitement and jubilation in Harlem since Joe Louis defeated Max Schmeling in 1939!!!! I heard there was absolute pandemonium on 125th street where an estimated 14,000 people turned out for a live broadcast of the results at the Harlem State Office Building.

It was truly a wonderful sight to see and I swear to you I will never forget this moment and the fact that I played a small part in making it happen. On another note: You just KNOW that Mama Michelle Obama is going to make a SPECTACULAR First Lady!!! (I wonder who's gonna make her gown for the Inaugural Ball!)

Finally! I (we) can take a small breath because we know that at the very LEAST we will NOT be getting another 4 years that were like the last 8.

I set my alarm at 6am to try to get to the polls early....I was so tired at 6am that I just waited until after 9am to go and vote up the street at the local school. And it was a good thing I waited...200 people were already lined up outside at 6:00am!!

I have voted in my district many times but I have NEVER seen a turn out like the one I saw this morning - Yes! The lines were long (I waited nearly an hour) and one of the two machines for my district broke down an hour after the polls opened. And yet the people stayed..some for hours, they talked to neighbors that they had either never seen or never spoken to before; they waited to get their votes in and I was so incredibly impressed by that. I don't believe there has been so much excitement about voting since the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965. Times are most certainly changing and stories were birthed tonight that folks will be able to pass down to generations to come. MAD KEWL FAMILY!!!!

Yes We Can My People!!!! Yes We Most Certainly Can!!!!

Rosa parks sat, so that Martin Luther King Jr. could walk, Martin walked so that Obama could run and now Obama is running so our children can fly!!!!

You just KNOW that Martin Luther King Jr. is doing the "happy dance" in Heaven right about now!!

Lol...one more thing...do you think somebody's gonna sneak in "The Electric Slide" at the Inaugural Ball??? I swear to you.....SOMEBODY in that room is gonna do it!

Wait and see fam!

Is gonna rule the population
So we keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change"

Flight Attendant Ruled Too Fat To Fly

by Meg Massie Nov 2nd 2008 @ 3:00PM

A 20-year legal battle between Philippine Airlines and flight steward Armanda Yrasuegi has finally ended with a Supreme Court ruling that grounds Yrasuegi for good. The airline dismissed Yrasuegi in 1989, because the 5'8 217-pound man had failed to lose weight, as required in his contract.

Yrasuegi cried discrimination, stating that his weight was a "sickness and physical abnormality" beyond his control, but this argument carried little weight when the flight attendant refused repeated offers of medical weight loss assistance. The Supreme Court upheld a lower court's ruling in favor of the airline, stating that Yrasuegi's weight "indicates absence of willpower rather than an illness."

The ruling went on to say that Yrasuegi's weight would likely keep him from performing his job efficiently, especially in the case of an emergency. According to Gadling's own flight attendant, Heather Poole, flight attendants must be able to fit through the exit door and buckle up in the jump seat, which may be difficult for a man nearly 60 pounds overweight.

The airline industry is one of the few where weight requirements aren't discrimination, but rather simply necessary. We don't know what Yrasuegi's contract with Philippine Airlines specifically required in terms of weight, but it doesn't seem that any airlines are asking their employees to have unrealistic Hollywood bodies.

It also sounds like Philippine Airlines was willing to pay for its employee's weight loss program -- how many other companies would do that?

Interesting Eh Family?
