Latifah designs chair for Monmouth Museum art event

Actress and recording artist Queen Latifah is designing and donating a chair for the annual "Charish the Museum" exhibition and auction at the Monmouth Museum in Middletown.

Queen Latifah, who lives in Colts Neck, is designing and painting the chair with her mother, former art teacher Rita Owens. The chair will be on exhibit Jan. 16 through Feb. 7 at the museum.

Other chairs, designed by local artists and artisans, will be on display at Beacon Fine Arts Gallery, 61 Monmouth St., Chetkin Gallery, 9 Wharf Ave., and Red Ginger Home, 65 Monmouth St., all in Red Bank; Beauregard Gallery, 109 East River Road, Rumson; Frederick Galleries, 1405 Third Ave., Spring Lake; Gallery Jupiter, 31 Church St., Little Silver; Robert Legere Interior Design, 521 Cookman Ave., Asbury Park; Shore Institute of Contemporary Art, 20 Third Ave., Long Branch; Weston Gallery, 79 Main St., Manasquan; and Windsor Gallery, 41 Route 34 South, Colts Neck.

The public can bid on the chairs, all of which will be at the museum on Feb. 7 when a silent auction with light refreshments takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets to the auction are $10 each, and the cost can be applied to the purchase of a chair.

Proceeds of the auction, which first took place in 2006, benefit the museum, located on the Brookdale Community College campus, Newman Springs Road (Route 520), in the Lincroft section. More than 35 chairs were auctioned last year. http://www.monmouthmuseum.org/ or (732) 747-2266.

"Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As the sun colors flowers, so does art color life."
